EDRG 3321 Author Profile

The third Author profile i did it on Michelle Knudsen. The book is named Library Lion. I bought this book at my son's book fair. I read it to him and he loved it! The book is about this Lion who goes to the library, there aren't any rules of why the lion can't be there. So they let him stay all the kids watch and are amazed. The lion loved story hour. The librarian started to use the lion to help her with things around the library. The librarian then fell off and the lion tried telling the other person there that she was in trouble and roared. They got after him for not being quiet so he went away. They didn't see he for a couple of days. He was just trying to help. It's a really good book with a happy ending. The moral of the story is sometimes it's okay to break the rules.
When i googled the author i found this website: http://www.michelleknudsen.com/works.htm, the website lists all of her books. Even the books she no longer publishes. The website also lists what awards she has gotten for the book Library Lion.

EDRG 3344 Narrative- Charlie the Lonely Turtle

There once was a turtle named Charlie. He was lonely. He had no friends or family. Charlie was all alone. Charlie lived in the water under a tree. He had everything he needed there. He had shelter, food, and a place to wonder. He would say, "Hello!" to all the fishes and sea animals. They were snobby, they wouldn't talk to him back. Then, one day while he was out wondering he caught a glimpse of what he thought was another turtle. He chased it. When he finally caught up with the fast turtle. He introduced himself and made small talk. It was love at first sight. After that day they were inseparable. She moved in with him and they mad a life together. Charlie was no longer lonely. He had found a life long companion. And they lived happily ever after. THE END!

Group presentations

Today we did our presentation of "The Giving Tree". I hadn't read this book before or even heard of Shel Silverstein. Doing the genre of poetry was fun and a learning experience for me. We worked great as a team and I hope everyone enjoyed our presentation. Also enjoyed the apples and cookies. =)
The second presenters did an excellent job, i thought the article was very cleaver and enteratining for us to hear. Good job!!

Group presentations

I loved the presentation over fantasy it was awesome! Great job girls! I loved all the pictures and the music realy helped set the theme. I can't remember when this group presentated I loved Tameika's reading of down the back of the chair! I know my son will love that book. GREAT JOB everyone!!

Group presentations

Today in class we did our first presentation. The group of girls that went up did a very good job. I loved the story and how the filmed the story themselves. I thought that was pretty creative. The girls did a good job of explaining the story and presenting the genre.

EDRG 3321 Chapter 11 Shared Reading

I think everyone knew what shared reading was and how important it is in the classroom. Shared reading can be used for all ages but it's main goal is to be keep children engaged and help them learn to read. Like in the last chapter we have to make sure we pick appropriate books to share, plan ahead always, and have good assignments to connect with the reading. Guided reading is also helpful, so that the children use what they just learned to read in there groups. It also helps rereading of the story. There are good examples in the book to help introduce guided readings. Guided reading and shared reading help the teacher see were the students progress is and how to help get them all on the same level.

EDRG 3321 Ch 10 Reading Aloud

Today we learned about Read alouds and how important they are for students. In class we took turns in our groups reading aloud to one another. The chapter talks about how to pick out a good text. Knowing what is good or bad for the students. We should plan ahead, well we should always do this. Have a place were we seat to read to create a comfortable environment. Making sure that when we do read alouds we ask questions stop and let the students think or guess of what will happen next. Very informative chapter.

EDRG 3321 Ch. 9 Nonfiction

I didn't know exactly what nonfiction meant, after the lecture today i do. I hadn't realized how much we use nonfiction on a day to day basis. My memory of nonfiction is going during class to the library and looking up a person in the encyclopedia. Copying the biographical information and making a short summary over it to present in class. I see how the teacher would use it in different ways an i didn't know the name. There are a lot of different types of nonfictional forms. I love the Magic school bus. I also loved the idea of a nonfictional scavenger hunt. We were also introduced to meeting of the minds, which i though was pretty interesting and would be fun for the students.

EDRG 3321 ch 8 Fiction

Learning about fiction today was great. We learned different kinds and what they intel. I also like that the stories aren't completely true but i like the drama. In this chapter they talk about a book named Sara plain and tall. I read this book when i was in elementary and I loved it. We read it in class together. This genre makes children think and help them be creative. The chapter also talks about series of books. The series of books that i have read are Harry Potter. I love those books especially when the movies come out.

EDRG 3321 Chapter 7 Picture Books

I am a very visual person and I love picture books. Picture books help you imagine what is going on in the story without giving vivid descriptions. I also like to see the authors view. Everyone sees differently and i would imagine the scene differently. I can't draw well and seeing other peoples drawings inspire me. i also liked the history of the picture books never knew there was a father of picture books. I stil remember my some of the picture books from when i was little and i know read them to my son. Picture books i fell help engage children in reading.

EDRG 3321 Chapter 6 Little Red Riding Hood

I enjoyed hearing this story. I thought it was interesting to know how the story come about. I never knew there was an old story, well that it was first this story and people changed it. The story has a differences that you notice write in the beginning. The wolf is called a bzou. Little red riding hood eats her grandmother's meat and drinks her blood. I thought that was pretty gruesome and glad they changed that part. When Mrs.Pickett talked about the story in class she talked about the girl shedding her clothes and how it could mean her going threw maturity. The story wouldn't be good to tell in school. I would be afraid to get complaints from concerned parents.

EDRG 3321 CH. 5 & 14

I love poetry!! I like chapter 5, it gives a lot of information about poetry the different types and kinds. The chapter also gives different ways you can categorize poetry. My favorite is free verse. I also like poems that don't give all the information but leave you guessing. The chapter gives good examples. Chapter 14 has good ideas of what we can do as teachers in the classroom to help engage the students with literature. Also to involve the students as much as we can so they also are authors and not just doing worksheets. I also think that the book is right in saying that us as teachers should believe we are good writers and the children will believe too.

EDRG 3321: Author Profile

Is there really a human race? By Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell

I bought this book at a book fair and I loved it. I didn't know that Jamie Lee Curtis was also a writer, i knew she was an actor. The book is viewed in a child's perspective, he doesn't know at first what a human race is. He thinks it's a race to see who wins. The book gives examples of the child's thoughts, it's pretty funny what he thinks. His mom in the end sits down and explains. I really enjoy this book my seven year old son once told a friend of Ming that was African American, "Why are you so dark?" My friend replied "Because I'm a different race." My son said, "I can race!" and started running around the couch. This book reminded me of my son. Here's the website:http://www.jamieleecurtisbooks.com/humanrace.html

EDRG 3321: Shared Reading

I think shared reading is very important in classrooms. I remember being little and loving when my teacher read new stories. I love to read. I read to my son and he enjoys all his books. Reading the shared reading article helped me understand why its important to read to children when they are little. They might not understand it fully but with repetition they will learn. They're little mind will start formulating questions and guesses. As we get older we start interpreting things differently and making sense of everything that is going on in the book. If i were to read a book that i read as a child it would mean something totally different then what i thought it meant as a child. Reading has always been enjoyment for me, reading of any kind will be good for our students.

EDRG 3344 Memories Precious as Gold =)

To me Precious as Gold would definitely have to be my family. My mom has 12 brothers and sisters still living. Every Sunday we go over to my Tia Benita house. Some of my family is there not all but it's still a lot of people there. One Sunday me and my sister had went over. We were all outside on the back patio. Probably like 25 of us were their. My cousin Crystal her boyfriend Alfred had gotten this lottery ticket from the flea market. He gave it to my aunt and she scratched it and looked shocked she reached over and told her daughter, who in return told my cousin, "Look we got three like amounts, 10,000, 10,000, 10,000! WE WON!!" My cousin Andrea immediately started saying down payment on a house, my other Tia Virgina was like give me $20 bucks because i was her when it happened. My Uncle Pete was tryn to put it away in his poket. My sister was like are you sure its real, no one could hear her over the commotion. My cousin boyfriend was feeling bad because the were all thinking they had won, he had to tell them that it was a fake lottery ticket. Boy, was my aunt mad. They had only in a couple of seconds decided how they were gonna spend the money and in reality they hadn't won anything. I couldn't stop laughing!! My family has a lot of fun, we joke around alot.

There once was a boy named Wahl, he worked all day non-stop. He was tired. He was a helper. He worked for a hairstylist his job was to cut hair. He had been working this way all year. His boss the hairstylist wouldn't let him rest. Sometimes she would forget to disinfect him. He would choke on hair. Then there were times he would short circuit or overheat because he wouldn't get a break. There were also times when his boss wouldn't oil him and he couldn't cut at his best. He decided to go on strike, he also gave her a piece of his mind. He told her how bad she had been treating him. The hairstylist was speechless she didn't know what to say. After thinking about what Wahl had told her she decided to get a new helper. So the hairstylist went to Sally's and bought the new pink Wahl her name was Pinkie. Pinkie was a beauty, she was the new version of Wahl. When Wahl saw her he fell in love. The hairstylist decided that she would use both clippers and give Wahl a rest while she used Pinkie. This made Wahl happy he got rest and found love. The hairstylist promised she would never overwork her helper again.

EDRG 3321 ch. 4

I love to read. I like it when a book takes you to an imaginary place, makes me think and learn new things. I read to my little boy books i liked as a child, he doesn't enjoy reading just yet. It could be maybe i haven't assessed his reading enjoyment. After reading we should talk about the book with others, talking with other people helps me now with real life situations. Sometimes there were things when i was little in books that i didn't understand and now as an adult i do. I also didn't know how much effort a teacher has to put in to make sure her class will enjoy the book she chooses and what she has to do in order to make her class understand the reading. How much the teacher will have to know about books in order to teach them. I also like how the book gives examples on what we can use in our classroom to help children understand reading better.

EDRG 3321 ch. 3

I learned a new vocabulary word: lexicon. Sometimes i think we read just to read and don't understand what we just read. I'm one of those people, i have to be concentrating on my reading, if not my mind wonders. Ill start thinking about what i have to do after class, etc. I will have to reread the passage in order to comprehend. The reading has to catch my attention in order for me to read it fully. I'm an aesthetic reader. The chapter gives good examples of getting children to want to read and help them concentrate on what they are hearing. The chapter had a lot of interesting assessments we could use once we start teaching.

EDRG 3321 Ch. 2

This chapter was a interesting chapter. I also didn't know the definition of culture. I always thought it was what race you are. I didn't realize how culture, does affect the way we learn. We are all brought up different. The way are culture is tells alot of the kind of person we are. Culture has a large influence on the way we think and learn. It would have been nice to see different cultures while i was in elementary. It might have been there but i dont remember much of other cultures. I also realized i am biased.

Writing is a PROCESS!!!! Writing has 5 stages. First stage is prewritting were the writer brainstorms ideas. Second is drafting writing the rough draft or outline.Third is revising making additions or deleting things that don't make sense. Fourth is editing, make sure the words are spelled right and punctuation. We text to much nowadays and abbreviate. Final step is publishing showing all your hard work off.
The one place I have always wanted to go since i was a child is Disney World. I will most definitely be taking my son. I have always wanted to go it's a lifelong dream, so I will be living vicariously threw my son.
Our first plane ride was the best! We got to sit by the window. At first we were both apprehensive but it wasn't as bad as i thought. My son enjoyed being able to be on a plane. The take off and landing were a little shaky but we did it!
When we arrived at the park, it was amazing! Everything was so colorful. We stayed at a hotel inside the park. We got to eat in a Disney themed restaurant everyday. Our room was really nice and on a high level floor.
Of course being super excited we went to the park. The first park was the best. We got to get on all the rides and everything was so Disney. The Disney characters were always in character. The best part was my son got to take pictures with different Disney characters and met them. We got to go to all the parks. It was so much fun.
We didn't want to leave but we new the vacation would end. We pack and I had to buy an extra suitcase for our souvenirs. This was our second plane ride unfortunately it was back home. We slept on the way home and were really tired. We arrived home and my son couldn't stop talking about our vacation.

EDRG 3344 Blog # 2

Pre-Would be like maybe doing an assignment that relates to the book that way the children understand the material, During-Would be relating what they have just learned to the text and reading the book, and After-Would be doing an assignment that helps they're understanding of the material. I think this process does help because it helps the students relate and get a better understanding of the book. If we just go straight to reading the book they wont understand it fully. The process helps them remember also all the information.

EDRG 3321 Childrens Literature

I found a cool website http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/awardsgrants/childrensnotable/notablechibooks/index.cfmthat had a couple of authors one that i liked was Bonny Becker. She wrote A Visitor For Bear about a grumpy bear who doesn't want any visitors and ends up getting a mouse visitor. I also liked Eleanor Davis she wrote a Book Named Stinky about a monster who lives in a swamp. I read the summary and i really think my son would enjoy this book. Stian Hole wrote a book called Garmann's summer, the little boy asks his family members threw out the book what there fears were and no one bothered to ask what his fear was. His fear was about starting first grade. This were just some of the authors i looked up, there are lots more on the website.

EDRG 3321 Chapter One

I loved the story of the teacher who worked longer hours even though she wasn't being paid to help her student read. I think there should be more teachers like this who strive to do the best they can to help her students no matter what the other teachers say. We as teachers should do as much possible we can to see our students succeed. This chapter made me think of what kind of teacher i want to be. It also gave me insight on how to want to motivate ours kids to want to read.

EDRG 3344 How do we learn?

Well, I don't know about everyone else but I learn from visual!!! I have a bad memory so, it helps to have pictures. I usually relate somehow the topic to a movie so I can remember it better or I just use repetition if I can't relate to anything else. I've also tried making up a saying or story to help, I know I'm not little anymore but whatever helps, will work. =)
